Old Oakland: our new home

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

First and foremost, please join us in our current initiative at Saucy this month (May 2022) for Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month.

We will be donating $1 for every Happy Hour item sold
Tuesday - Saturday from 4:30 - 6 pm
.

Tony and I come from immigrant families who’ve worked tirelessly to set roots here in America. We wanted to give back by donating to a local non-profit that supports youth and families in the #AAPI community.

This will be our very first time donating to a cause we care about and we hope to continue this effort each month in the near future. If there’s a non-profit you’d recommend, please reach out to saucyoakland@gmail.com and share a little background.

Happy Hour at Saucy Oakland

Happy Hour here at Saucy is a great way to either introduce yourself to our food or return for your favorites. Depending on our mood, we like to jam to 2000’s hip hop and pop, mixed with a little disco or jazz covers. Either way, you’ll be sure to have a little fun.

Some items are exclusive to the HH menu, some are discounted, while others are available on the regular dinner menu. Some examples are pictured below.

HH Reservations are Welcomed!

We’re here. We made it!

We love how the space turned out with only a month’s worth of DIY work. If you’ve been to our previous location, you’d recognize a similar vibe in the look-n-feel. We found the perfect spot for our SAKE sign and the sake wall. Most decor items made it up, while the rest went to live in one of our homes or our upstairs office. Rest assured, they’ve lived their decor destinies.

Even with a bigger space, it still feels cozy and inviting. This is an important part of our concept as we want our food and premium sake to be welcoming to all.

With that said, any time you join us, don’t be shy to ask for recommendations. We’re also happy to offer tastes of our sake. Our staff is not only trained on the food/drinks, but they also have their personal favorites so be sure to ask!

Feature Wall - Floral Mural

Our mural at Saucy is created by our talented friend @Hi.IRIE
accompanied by talented friend/artist @iamkaiea

After Iris created the mural at our Telegraph spot, we knew we needed another feature wall with our relocation. Below is a description of the mural.

Hawaiian Tattoo Elements: A combination of Hawaiian tattoo elements are used in the background, with the upper elements representing guidance, strength, and bravery. The lower elements represent creativity and creation. These elements are made up of the Hawaiian shark teeth and spear.

Hibiscus: The growing hibiscus represent friendship, passion, and joy.

Background color: Dark green/teal background with bright combination of orange, red, magentas, and purples in the foreground.

Monstera: represents honor and respect for the community.

March: a work in progress

The last day of service at our Telegraph location was Sat. Feb 26, 2022. We had slowly packed up that week and it wasn’t until Sun, the next day that we had the big move. Our friends and family gathered to load up their cars and trucks to help us with a majority of the move.

Going into March, we spent weekends working day and night, as well as whatever weekdays we could put in to get the place setup to our liking. Every step of the way, we were able to pitch in to complete the health department’s checklist items, decor, and station setups.

Looking back, this was the most straining part of the project. But every time I walk into Saucy, all of the hard work was well worth it!

Here are some working photos:

Just for fun, here’s a look at the space when we received the keys. It was a beautiful space to start with!

Looking Ahead

Since our soft opening on April 6th, we’ve been able to get our menu up and running. This means that the items you see listed here have been in rotation long enough to manage (ingredients sourced and prep/storage figured out).

Next, we will be reviewing our current and prospective vendors to see if can improve our sourced ingredients on current and upcoming menu items.

Recent New Menu Items:

  • A5 Hiroshima Wagyu: Japanese wagyu teppan-style, self-grilled at your table

  • Basil Chicken: ground chicken, bell peppers, fried egg, fresh Thai Basil, slaw, Japanese short-grain rice - currently a crowd favorite!

  • Veggie Special: A weekly special veggie stir-fry served with a side of rice

  • Miso Sea Bass: marinated Chilean sea bass with a miso glaze, served with veggies and white rice
